Thank you!
Thanks to all for supporting me in the May primary! The focus turns now to the fall election. There are several issues to be addressed, including final resolution of a location for the Youth Shelter, the need for county jail expansion, upgrades to the City-County Building, and improved online accessibility to government services for county residents. It's time to move forward on these issues, but it is critical that these ventures be completed without tax increases on our residents. There is much work to be done in
reducing the size of government, eliminating waste, and improving efficiency. With your help in November, I pledge to be proactive in creating this agenda.

All over Floyd County, people are asking the question,
"How many people from one family do we need
in local government?"

Government today lacks accountability. What is best for the people often takes a backseat to what is best for the next election. I am a fiscal conservative who feels that our tax dollars are often spent on wasteful projects and unnecessary government. I will make it my personal priority to reduce wasteful spending, cut red tape and let our taxpayers know how their money is being spent. I would like to have the council meetings televised on so that everyone could see what goes on in the meetings. I
think that the meeting minutes should be posted online. I also think that responsible government is ethical government, and that it is a privilege not a benefit to serve our community.

Building Issues The City County building has been long past due for an upgrade to the electrical, plumbing and heating systems. It was only last year that a new roof was installed. The reason that upgrades have been delayed is the question about turning the building into a judicial center. Since we need to add on to the county jail and we just added another courtroom, it would make sense to move the City of New Albany offices to
their own building (now under consideration) and move the county offices to a new building as well. It has been proposed to either (a) add onto the City County building and close Hauss Square to traffic or (b) build a new building as part of a new development in the west end of New Albany. I would be interested in people’s thoughts on these ideas.

LOIT looks like dead issue
By CHRIS MORRIS

It looks like Floyd County workers won’t be paying an extra tax in 2009.
After narrowly passing a Local Option Income Tax — or LOIT — by a 4-3 vote at its November meeting, the Floyd County Council has had a change of heart.
A second reading and vote is required before the tax becomes law. The vote will likely look much different than the one taken last month.
“I’m telling people I’m voting no,” said council President Larry McAllister, who voted for the tax last month. “I made a mistake. I should have never brought it up at this time.”
A second reading and vote will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the assembly room of the City-County Building.
The vote went along party lines with McAllister, Tom Pickett, Ted Heavrin and Carol Shope — all
Democrats — voting for the tax and Republicans Dana Fendley, Lana Aebersold and John Schellenberger voting against.
